Question about sunless tanner and foundation?

i've never tried a sunless tanner but i was deciding if i should use it on my face. i've found the perfect foundation and have been using it for years so i don't want to have to get a new foundation because my face is a slightly different shade. could i just use my foundation then put a bit of bronzer on? i don't plan on getting super tan, i just want some colour so i don't look completely pasty in a bathing suit. if i can avoid putting some on my face, i'd rather just leave it. tips anyone?
